Weekly Report

Sometimes we neglect doing art lessons, so I’m trying to make an effort to remember to do this! We finished up our Joseph the Canada Goose art lessons this week, but we have plenty of other things to do in upcoming weeks.

We completed the Week 18 AmblesideOnline Year Two readings. Kathryn’s favorite of all that we’re currently reading is The Little Pilgrim’s Progress. We finished up The Tree in the Trail this week, so I found another “Dear America” book that is set in the same time period; All the Stars in the Sky is a fictional journal of a girl who crossed the Santa Fe trail 1868. Kathryn says it was a really good book.

Each morning we’ve been enjoying a brief devotion at breakfast time, and continuing to read a lesson from Big Truths for Little Kids each week. Our memory verse was 1 Corinthians 14:33. The character trait we focused on this week: “truthful.”

Kathryn loves to start a handiwork project but often loses steam as she goes along. I must figure out how to work on this tendency of hers without nagging. She’s still working on that needlepoint horse from last week. I have another project in mind when she’s done with this, so I hope she’ll finish up soon. We’re going to be spending more time cooking and learning to prepare meals, too. cookingThe Paula Deen kids’ cookbook she received for Christmas has “real” meals, in addition to tasty desserts and such, so I plan to help her prepare a whole meal one day next week. She has already made monkey bread from this cookbook twice (yum!), and she was responsible for checking to see if we had the ingredients and then adding to the grocery list if there were any we needed to buy.

A couple of times each week, Kathryn reads aloud to me from Doors to Discovery. It’s a great way to see how she’s reading, and great practice for her. She absolutely loves it. The stories are entertaining and usually have a nice little lesson in them as well.

We’re continuing along with math as we have been.

Our new edition of God’s World News “Taking Off” magazine arrived, so Kathryn read Unit One, “Sorting Animals”, as well as more about current events around the world.

Despite the cold (it was TEN degrees this morning!), we did accomplish a nature study this week, from the warmth of our own home. We observed, studied, and drew in our nature journals about chickadees. (Read more about that in the post right before this one.)
