Welcome to our school room!

We need our school room to be right in the middle of things, and our living/dining room is the most convenient, central part of the house. It’s where all of our bookcases are, and it’s close to the kitchen for snacks — and tea!

Last week, I moved my computer downstairs (which required a bit of furniture re-arranging to make a little nook for my desk), so now I am just across the room from where Kathryn does her schoolwork. Much better for when I need to be involved or helping her with whatever she’s doing.
In the photo below, you can see where my desk is in relation to everything, and where our school room is in relation to the rest of the house. The kitchen is just to the right of where I was standing for this photo, and that’s the front door you see there. Our bedrooms are all on the main level of the house, too.

Lindsey really wanted a desk in her bedroom because she feels that will make it easier for her to concentrate on her work. Less distractions. So we moved the formerly-known-as-Brandon’s desk down from his now-empty room (since he moved into a nearby apartment recently). Lindsey will be working mostly independently this year, so this arrangement should work just fine. Because her room is just down the hall, it will still be convenient whenever she needs my help with anything.
The computer stays where everyone can see what everyone else is doing. Too much icky/scary stuff on the internet to not have a whole lot of accountability. Their computer time is limited to less than one hour per day; if I see that they actually need more time for school-related work, we can increase that a bit.

What a happy place! I agree with homeschooling, computers and everything being central. Learning right in the center. Thanks for sharing. Love it!
Love your space! I’m loving the lazy susan with supplies. I may have to borrow that idea.
awww I love your place! It looks inviting and fun, without all schoolish and utilitarian. It still looks like home. Thanks for sharing!!

It does have a cozy, warm feel to it! I am afraid to have such a fun school area right in the middle of everything here, because I might not ever STOP!

I love how you have incorporated your school room into your home…it looks beautiful! You mentioned IKEA in your comment on my blog…we have one about an hour away, I’d love to take a trip over there…but I think it would be dangerous on our wallet
I so love the use of your space . . . thanks for sharing. Have a blessed week.

It’s so funny that you just posted about your school room because I was just about to do a post featuring my Aunt Julie’s school room here in Qatar (check for it tomorrow). It is adorable and it totally makes me want to home school someday! : )
Hello Jamie – your room is beautiful. We have spent the past few days organizing and clearing out clutter in hopes to start school next week. Since we have sold our home and now rent we lost our school room. I love how your dining rooms shares space with school. I need to try and do some rearranging too. Thanks for the inspiration.
**I Love it!!**
You’ve given me some inspiration… after moving house I’m setting up again – mostly this coming weekend while hubby takes the kids away. I was dreading it but you’ve sparked a little excitement for me

I love ur space! Your home is just precious and so happy looking. Where did you get all of those white bookcases? Are the built-in and just came with the house or did you get them from somewhere (like…..(crossing my fingers)…Ikea??) We need more shelving and I love how clean those look~
Let me know and we’ll be on our way to ikea!

Yes, it was IKEA!!
Saw your blog graphic at the Hop, loved it, so had to stop by. Lovely post, but confess I got sidetracked by the adoption stories. I’m a blessed mother to two domestic models and twin imports. Love it!

I’m pretty sure I broke the 10th commandment looking at your lovely educational space. Our “school room” is really just the room where the school supplies are stored because no one actually does “school” in there – which is why my yarn stash is taking up half the room. I told the kids they need to clean up their desks this week so I can get to the school supplies to plan the school year. They looked at me like I’m an alien. Can you tell that we’re sooooo not ready for school? And I have a migraine? Ah, well. I’m sure they’ll learn something this year. Maybe not to covet someone else’s school room!
(Seriously, it’s a lovely place to work. Your girls are very fortunate. And good idea on keeping all the computers in the main room.)

We share the same taste. Where did you find your curtains???? I adore them and would love to get some.

I actually made those curtains! The fabric was $5/yard at a local fabric store. They are actually slightly too short (oops!) but I have my furniture positioned where you can’t really tell until I get around to fixing them.
Nice!

Beautiful room, Jamie!! I just love your style!!
Hope you have a wonderful year!!
I love your curtains, Jamie! Very cute. And that lazy susan on the table for supplies is a great idea.
It seems we are always rearranging things at our house as well. But computers always stay in public areas. I’m with you, too many dangers and temptations to have them in your own room… better to have accountability.

YES, our school is right in the middle of everything too. We live in a town house and our kitchen/living room are also our school room! I will be posting pics. of our school room, soon, too! It’s nice to see I am not alone. BUT you know what! I like everything together, it’s easier, and that’s the point right!
Oh my, you have such a lovely school area. A nice space that invites learning.
I’m going to be adding you to my sidebar. I love your blog!
I love your school space! That is what I’m trying to accomplish right now. My dining room is right in the middle of our old farmhouse and I’m basically turning it into an old timey schoolroom. When I get it completed, I will post pictures. Thanks for sharing!

Your homeschool room looks wonderful! I’m truly at an envy since my kitchen bay window seating area is the current spot to our homeschool items. I love the modern white bookshelves but your antique style desk is the charmer.
