The Real {online} Me

In my little corner of the online world, I want to be real — but that doesn’t mean sharing EVERY little thing. I share more personal things about my family than many bloggers do, but there’s simply no reason to share the nittiest of the grittiest. It would violate the trust of those closest to me, and that is NOT okay. I won’t candy-coat my life, but I will make a point of celebrating the good rather than focusing on the bad.

Real JamieThanks to my husband, this photo is lit very well and I look pretty good — but to be a “finished” image (I’m a photographer, remember!?), I would’ve edited it further. So this is not the no-makeup real me, but it is the un-retouched me.

A dear friend of mine has decided to step back a bit from blogging, and part of her reason is that she doesn’t want to present a different self online than she is real life. And that’s complicated, because while she’s totally real in what she does share, she’s not willing to compromise herself or her family relationships in sharing some things that frankly aren’t anyone else’s business (my words; not hers). On the flip side, though, these other offline things greatly affect who she is — which leads her to the feeling that she isn’t sharing her whole, real self.

In most of the online social media world (blogs, facebook, etc), folks tend to share only the best of what’s happening. That’s important to remember, because it’s very easy to see those things and think those people live spectacularly amazing lives; and that can lead to thinking our own lives pale in comparison.

Here’s the thing: this is blogland. Live-streaming cams from bird nests are one thing, but a blog is not intended for that kind of view into anyone’s life. You can’t actually LIVE a life if you’re spending most of your time blogging about it. My friend’s main goal in stepping back from her online life is to allow time for her offline life. She is at a very different life stage than I am, and is far more accomplished in the blogging world than I am, but when she explained these things, much of it resonated with me.

Keeping a balance is hard. As far as what I share online, and in how I schedule/manage my time, I have to make a point of being intentional about keeping my offline life a priority. Not just because I blog; life can easily get off-balance even for those who spend zero time online. Part of the challenge is that there’s no set formula, because as life changes — by seasons of life or sometimes even day to day — the specifics vary.

I appreciate each and every one of you willing to join me on my journey here, and I promise to keep on being real. But please remember: although this is the real me, it will never be my whole life, or my whole self. It can’t be, and it shouldn’t be.

You like me, you really like me!

Seriously, I am completely blown away this morning to see that I have been nominated in SIX different categories in the Homeschol Post 7th Annual Blog Awards.

I’m not overly concerned about the outcome of these awards. I’ll be totally excited if I do win in any of these categories, but I’m really just delighted that at least six folks out there in blogland find a bit of joy or encouragement from my ramblings enough to think I’m award-worthy. ;)

Now the really, really hard part starts because I love so many bloggy friends that choosing who to vote for will be torturous!!! But the really FUN part is getting to check out all those nominee blogs that I’ve never heard of before. This is a FABULOUS place to find wonderful new blogs to read, so please take some time and visit as many as you can in the list of nominees! That’s how I plan to spend most of my blog-reading time this week!

Thanks again, friends!

(And if you’re brand new here, welcome! I consider you a friend already!)

See Jamie on Facebook

I did it. I’m back on facebook. Now that I can update it via my iPhone, I’m not really “on” it as much, which was my main goal in the first place. Shutting down my facebook profile entirely for months broke me of it as a habit, and that’s a good thing.

And now, See Jamie Blog has a brand spankin’ new facebook page! That means another easy place you can connect with me! I’m sharing all sorts of great links about homeschooling, adoption, homemaking, parenting, marriage, recipes, and other randomly interesting stuff; I’ll do my best to answer any questions you leave there as well!

So, I’d love for you to pop on over and “like” my facebook page. See you there soon!

This is a fun opportunity to bless your favorite social media pals!

You can nominate folks in ten categories, such as The Lesson Planner, The Sage, Shutter-Happy, Thrifty-Thinker, etc. Winners will receive a nifty badge of recognition for their blog/website, and will have a permanent link at a landing page on the AO Homeschooling website. The GRAND PRIZE winner will receive a set of AO curriculum in any brand/grade they desire plus three subjects to give away to whoever they desire.

Fun, huh?

Jump on in and nominate your favorites!

Flat Jamie Winner Announced!

Flat Jamie has been running a giveaway contest to find out who will be her travel buddy to Relevant ’11, and today she’s happy to announce the winner!

It was a tough decision for my family to choose Flat Jamie’s companion. All the offers sounded fabulous! There were promises of coffee and tea, promises of all the places Flat Jamie could go and what she could do. My family knew that Flat Jamie would get along well with anyone who planned to bring oodles of hand sanitizer along with them. A promise of hugging Sally Clarkson’s neck was a definite plus, but so was going for a run with other Relevant attendees since real Jamie has been working on getting fit.

But after all much deliberation, our winner is…

Carey at Cravings –
“Desiring God in the Midst of Motherhood

Look for Carey’s pretty blog button on my sidebar, and a guest post coming whenever she’s ready to share one! :) And of course, Carey also gets a copy of Large Family Logistics as part of the giveaway prize! As I’ve said before, it’s a fantastic book — and not just for large families! I think every homemaking mama should have one!

Thanks soooooo much for everyone who participated in this silly little contest. I had fun with it!

Win Flat Jamie as Your Travel Buddy!

Last year, Kris took Flat Jamie to Relevant. A delightful time was had by all. I thought that maybe — just maybe — the real Jamie would go to Relevant 2011, but it looks like that just isn’t going to happen. However, Flat Jamie wants to go again, and because she is so doggone much fun, she and I have decided to have a little contest to see who gets to be her travel buddy.

First of all, here’s what you can win:

  1. The privilege of having Flat Jamie as your travel companion. (This, of course, is the BEST of the prizes!)
  2. A copy of one of my favorite recent reads, Large Family Logistics. This is not just for large families; it’s fabulous!
  3. A guest post here on See Jamie Blog. Why is this a good prize? Problogger lists guest posting as one of the best ways to build your blog readership! Or check out even more reasons to guest post!
  4. Your blog button on my sidebar for the next six months! That’s free advertising — and who doesn’t want that!? (125 x 125 ad spot)

I know you want to take me Flat Jamie with you, so here’s what to do to enter this contest:

Brainstorm what merrymaking things you’d do with Flat Jamie, then send me your ideas! I’ll let my family pick what sounds like the most fun, and that will be our winner! The only requirement is that you’re going to Relevant 2011 — and of course that you keep it all G-rated and family-friendly!

Send in your ideas any time this month, and I’ll announce the winner on June 1st!

Happy-Making Blogging Tips

I have a blog, and I read blogs. Neither of those facts makes me any sort of blogging pro, but in my opinion, these tips will make reading your blog more enjoyable for anyone who visits. :)

1) Make an “About” page.
Keep it fairly short, but give me the basics I need to know for your blog to make sense if this is my first visit. For instance: If you frequently blog about your kids, tell me their ages and [blog] names. This makes my blog-reading life much less confusing. Update anytime something significant changes.

2) Streamline your categories.
Identify the main things you blog about, and make those your categories. Then make them easy for me to find, either in a navigation bar, or perhaps in your sidebar.

3) Let me read your feed in my feed reader.
In this post by Tentblogger, he says it pretty bluntly: “If your visitor has taken the time to subscribe to your blog then you should do everything that you possibly can to serve them the content in the fullest way possible! I believe that if they want to read it via their RSS Reader then they want to read it IN their RSS Reader!”

There are some really wonderful blogs that I’d like to subscribe to, but if I can’t read the feed in my feed reader, then what’s the point of subscribing?

4) Let me easily turn off music.
If you choose to have music, please make it EASY for me to turn off. I often have more than one tab open in my browser to read several blog articles, and having several different blogs playing music all at once is particularly crazy-making.

If you choose to allow comments, please make it easy. . .
5a) Double-check your comment settings.

On blogger, for instance, if you choose “users with google accounts,” that means no one can comment without a google account; that may eliminate comments from friends who don’t blog, or who only have accounts with other blog hosts.

5b) If possible, please don’t use captcha codes.
I hate spam, so I understand the reasoning behind it, but if at all possible, try using comment moderation instead of captcha codes. I know blogger and wordpress both allow this. (I love the fact that wordpress only requires that I moderate a comment from a commenter one time, and then they are on my “approved commenter” list.)

6) Paragraphs are your friend.
It’s so much easier to read (or occasionally skim) blog posts that have paragraphs. Maybe even put your main point in bold type. If you (like me) are too loquacious to keep every post short and to the point, it’s best to make it easy for readers to figure out what your point really is.

What suggestions would you add?

Who Reads Me?

A month or so ago, I conducted a little reader survey to find out who the heck reads this blog! For those interested, here are the stats:

98% of my readers are female.

95% of my readers are married.

94% of my readers are parents. Of those…
more than half (56%) have 3 – 5 children;
42% have one or two children;
2% have more than five children.

90% are stay-at-home parents.

74% are bloggers.

Most readers (68%) are between the ages of 25-40;
30% are over the age of 40.

88% homeschool their children, or are considering it.

12% of readers are adoptive or foster parents,
another 14% are in process or considering it. (Exciting!)

I received so many sweet, encouraging comments, so THANK YOU if you were one of those! I just love y’all!
