It’s been colder than usual this winter (though you wouldn’t know that from our weather last week!) and I’ve used that as an excuse for doing some redecorating around here. We put in new floors downstairs, primarily because we wanted to rip out the old allergy-filled carpet (which has already meant improvements with Kathryn’s asthma!). The flooring project required moving EVERYTHING out of the way, so I used the opportunity to reevaluate every piece of furniture before bringing it back in. My mom and I swapped a couple of pieces; I swapped a few things from one room to another; and I sold some old furniture and bought a couple of new pieces.
It’s been fun and I’ll share more photos when I’m done! But until then…
Mercury glass!
I adore mercury glass and decided mercury glass lamps would go better in the living room than my old brass ones. {By the way, TJ Maxx is a great place to find lamps and throw pillows!} When I bought a new cabinet to serve double-duty as TV stand and side table, I didn’t like the clear glass because you could see all the cords and things inside — so I decided to try a DIY faux mercury glass technique I found on Pinterest!
{Sorry, y’all: no “before” photo because I was too impatient to get started!}
In process:
A close-up of the speckled mercury-ish glass:
WonderDog never poses for photos. Unless I’m trying to take a photo of something else, in which case she won’t get out of the way.
And then she decided to lay right where I wanted to stand. You can see how exciting she thought this was. {However, she does love our new teal rug!}
And the finished project:
The verdict:
Clearly, this didn’t come out looking like mercury glass. To be fair, I didn’t use the specific brand of spray paint called for in the tutorial. But also, every project I saw online was intended to paint the front of the glass, and that didn’t work for this project. But overall I’m pleased because it still looks nice, especially with the grey cabinet, and it does hide scary/messy contents inside, so I’m satisfied for now.
I made a bedskirt, too!
I thought about making a ruffled bedskirt, but then I read tutorials on how to do that and it looked like entirely too much trouble. When I found this tutorial to make a simple fake-pleated tailored bedskirt, that looked like a much more reasonable project. I’m very happy with it:
More Pinterest fun!

Very nice job…although I must admit I love the photos of WonderDog the most!! She’s adorable 🙂
Thanks! Yes, she’s adorable and I’m pretty sure she knows it!
