From everything I’ve heard, the movie “American Sniper” is powerful. (I haven’t watched it yet.) The film is adapted from a marine’s autobiography; because of the subject matter, I don’t expect it to be an easy film to watch, but I believe it’s crucial we understand the cost of service to both those serving in the military, as well as the cost for the families they leave behind to preserve our freedom.
Synopsis of “American Sniper”
The following is from the movie’s press release:
From director Clint Eastwood comes “American Sniper,” starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, whose skills as a sniper made him a hero on the battlefield.
But there was much more to him than his skill as a sharpshooter.
Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield, and as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname “Legend.” However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world.
Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to “leave no one behind.” But upon returning to his wife, Taya (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.

I am thankful for the right to walk down the street without fear of being harmed for showing my hair, face, legs or arms.
My hero has to be my husband, EJ, who served in World War II. He talked lots about being on the infantry lines, etc. but the one thing that bothered me so much, he couldn’t stand the sound of a loud pop, not even a balloon popping or firecracker going off. The worse thing and so pitiful, during a thunderstorm, I would wake up and find him in the hall with his fingers in his ears. That’s what bullets did to him. Even though we weren’t married at the time he served, he was and will always be my Hero,
My brother, served in Vietnam, he came home, the rest of his unit did not. I’m thankful everyday….. everyday that I am blessed to see a sunrise, a sunset, a flower growing, the rain, the smile on my sons face, his laughter, his breath as he gives me a hug and says I love you Mom, My son is a firefighter, and as he answers his call of duty, voluntarily, I also pray he comes back home, just as my mother did for my brother and as many mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, brothers, sisters… all of those out there that have… Read more »
I come from a family that highly values military service. Both of my grandfathers, my brother, and two cousins have served or currently serve. I think that we have taken our freedom in America for granted and are watching idly as it is being taken away. I have most valued Freedom of Religion – however, that is being infringed on more and more.
My military hero is my father. He was drafted into the army and served his country during the cuban missal crisis. Thanks for the giveaway.
I’m thankful for freedom of religion.
My best friend is my hero she is serving overseas tonight for our country!
God Bless Our Troops.
I know several military heroes. My grandfather and husband’s 2 grandpas (WW2), uncle and husband’s uncle (Vietnam), and several friends (Iraq/Afghanistan). I’m proud of and thankful to them all!
I am thankful for several of my friends who served in the military (one Navy and one Air Force, that I’m remembering right now) and how hard it’s been on their family at times.
My grandfather is my military hero!
I’m thankful for freedom of speech
My grandfather fought in Pearl Harbor as a part of the US Navy. I wrote a paper on his encounters in college and he opened up to me like he never had before about his horrific encounters there. Although he has been gone for 2 years, he will always be my hero and be the most unconditional loving person I have ever known.
My grandmother is my military hero. She’s my rock and inspiration.
Freedom of country
My best friend Mark comes to mind. He enlisted to the marines last year. He’s the only one I know who’s joined and I’m so happy for him and thankful that he’s serving our country!
My brother, who is in the Air Force, is my hero!
Jamie,
I’m glad you are bringing positive attention to our dedicated American military!
Their sacrificial service should never by belittled or ignored. WE reap the benefits,
and they pay the heaviest prices! My son read Chris Kyle’s book and make us
aware of his life, service, and death.
I’m so grateful for the sacrifices our military makes. We have a good friend who was deployed just this week. Im grateful for my religious freedom and the freedom to raise my children according to our family values.
Freedom of speech is pretty special to me and my father is my military hero!
My grandfather is my military hero! He was in WWII in the (now) Air Force. He doesn’t volunteer to talk about it much, but I treasure the stories he DOES share with me! He is truly part of the Greatest Generation!
My favorite military hero is my husband, he actually was deployed with this guy on his first tour in Iraq!
I am grateful for being able to choose where I live, our religion. I am a veteran and did not serve in combat, yet I knew so many people who did. They often came back changed, and I never want my children or myself to take for granted all the soldiers do, being deployed and leaving their families, and the many lives that have been lost.
My grandfather’s, Uncle and hubby were all in the military. My Uncle had the hardest re-entry into society again though.
My military hero is my dad who retired last year after serving 32 years. As a family we endured countless deployments. I am so proud of him and all of our military men and women and all of their families. It is a sacrifice on all of their parts that helps make this country such an amazing one. I am so grateful to be able practice the religion I believe in and have the right to homeschool my children!
My dad is my hero, having served in the Korean War. I’m so grateful for those who fight for my freedoms, especially my freedom to worship as I choose.
I’m thankful for all of the freedoms and love my military hero, my mother.
I am thankful for my freedom in general and freedom of speech.
I use to love listening to my grandpas war stories. I wish I would have asked more and wrote them down. I’m thankful for the soldiers and vets who have kept our first amendments rights safe.
There are so many that I am thankful to. My father served in the Navy in WWII and I am so thankful that he made it back. He was injured but nobody knows the story. He never talks about it. I have several relatives that have served and several friends that have served or are still serving. I am so very thankful for all the people that serve because without their service and the sacrifice they and their families make we wouldn’t have all the freedoms we as Americans enjoy every day. Many take for granted all the military have… Read more »
I am thankful for our freedom of speech. As for military hero I’m going with my friend Jared.
My military hero is my dad.
