Thirteen-year-old Kathryn has recently taught herself how to crochet, how to do fancy knitting stitches, and some fairly complicated origami. I let her run with it because she’s demonstrated that creative projects like these have helped her learn how to learn — and that’s one of the biggest long-term lessons I want for my kids.
Kathryn is a self-professed geek, so these Star Wars themed projects are right up her alley. I let her join Pinterest a few months ago to help fuel her creativity, and she already has her own Pinterest board chock full of geeky crafts!
Star Wars origami
Kathryn made an origami Millenium Falcon (see photo above) but she says those directions may be tricky for beginners. You can find more Star Wars origami projects here and here.
Star Wars crochet projects
These adorable crochet projects are all on Kathryn’s agenda, but she hasn’t decided which to tackle first.
- R2D2 earflap hat
- adult-sized Yoda hat
- R2D2 cup warmer
When I dressed up as Princess Leia decades ago, my hair was made of fake fur!
This version of a Princess Leia wig is much cuter. {But you’ve gotta give my mom credit for some awesome creativity in the days before Pinterest!}
Other fun Star Wars projects:
Kathryn plans to make this for her room soon: Luke and Vader lightswitch.
Star Wars + LEGOs + crafts? Fabulous! LEGO Star Wars clock.
One more project: this one is perfect for geek girls: light saber earrings.
