Summer Beauty: A Mother-Daughter Interview {Visa Gift Card Giveaway}
Venus asked a few bloggers to do a follow-up to last month’s review/giveaway posts — but this time the daughters get to interview their moms about summer beauty do’s and don’ts. I wrangled Kathryn into helping me with this since she was the main focus of my review/giveaway post; she’s the questioner and I’m the answerer here:
Q: What’s the most important beauty tip you’d give me for summertime?
A: I’ll quote your great-granmama on this one. People often complimented her beautiful skin, even when she was getting older. Actually, at 85, she still has pretty skin for her age. She always told people her beauty secret was “Oil of Olay and a sun hat.” So really, she means she has made a point of taking care of her face and never getting too much sun. I do like to get a little bit of a tan in the summer, but I don’t want to look like leather when I’m older, so I try to protect my skin — and I think that’s most important on your face!
Q: What was the worst thing that ever happened to you as far as summer beauty stuff goes?
A: That’s a tough one. I’ve had plenty of beauty disasters (like that perm my friend Lisa talked me into in 9th grade or that time my hair turned a very strange shade of purple after a henna dye) but most weren’t summer-related. I guess badly-timed sunburn would be the worst. Sunburns just never look cute — and peeling skin is even worse! Oh and too much bronzer!
Q: Some people only shave their legs when they’re going to wear a dress. Is that what you do?
A: I shave my legs just about every time I shower, even in the winter, because I hate stubble — but even more so this time of year when we’re going to the pool and I’m wearing shorts or summer dresses! I’ve found that the Venus Embrace 5-blade razor is easy to grip and is less likely than some other razors to nick my skin when I shave. And summery-smelling Satin Care Passionista Fruit Shave Gel helps prevent irritation, which is a big deal with my sensitive skin. Sometimes girls try to shave without shaving cream or gel, but that can lead to razor bumps, which aren’t pretty at all! [By the way, moms, there are some good tips from Venus on the “Tips and Hints” page for moms of daughters who might be getting ready to shave.]
Q: I thought chlorine from the pool made your hair get weird. Is that true?
A: That’s especially true for anyone who has bleached their hair, but even if you don’t color your hair the chlorine and chemicals in pool water can dry it. It’s a good idea to rinse it out in the shower at the pool. Using a good leave-in conditioner can help, too.
Q: It seems like you don’t wear much makeup in the summer. Why not?
A: It doesn’t take much to get sweaty in the summer here in Georgia — like just a trip to the mailbox! So wearing a bunch of makeup would be pointless because it would just melt off. Plus, I think casual summer outfits just don’t call for much makeup. Some summer days, I don’t wear anything more than a tinted lotion with sunscreen, but if we’re going somewhere a little bit fancy, then I do wear a little more makeup.

My best summer beauty tip is to wear lots of skirts and sundresses! Not only are they feminine, pretty, and flattering, but they’re comfortable and cool, which is absolutely necessary during the heat of the summer! And depending on what shoes you wear, what jewelry you accessorize with, and how you do your hair, a simple sundress can be perfect for either a day at the beach or a night on the town. 🙂
Thanks, Jamie and Kathryn, for your tips and ideas!
My mother always emphasized the importance of sunscreen. She has great skin so I need to listen to her!

My mom always said to moisturize and wear sunscreen whenever I am outside.
My sister has skin cancer on her scalp. She has made me swear to wear a hat as much as possible to protect the part line in my hair. My fair skin burns so easily and skin cancer on your head is no fun. I wear lotion with sunscreen every day of the year on my face….still get plenty of freckles.
My summer beauty problem is dry skin on my heels.

Summer mistake – letting my college roommate cut my hair so it wouldn”t be as hot – not a pretty outcome!
My best summer beauty tip is to always wear sunscreen.
My favorite beauty treat this summer has been a keratin treatment for my hair. It has completely tamed my long, frizz-prone locks – even when I don’t have the time or inclination to blow it dry.
My biggest beauty mishap was when I tried to highlight my hair at home; It was one of those kits where you pull the hair through the cap with a little crochet needle and someone how I ended up with a boatload of highlights on the left side of my head and very few on the right (I assume because I’m right-handed, it was easier to pull out from the left). I ended up calling my mom to come over and redo the left side for me.

My funniest beauty mishap happened years ago. I was getting ready for work….during a storm. Power went out. No lights in the bathroom as I was finishing getting ready for work and putting on my makeup. I thought…I have done this so many times…I could do it in my sleep! Haha..wrong. My blush and powder foundation where in a container that looked almost the same. I ended up putting my blush on all over instead of the powder! Haha…..I laughed so hard when I got in the car and looked in the rearview mirror!

My beauty tip is to always wash your hair after swimming in the pool, because the chlorine will dry it out and make it really frizzy.

My tip is to always wear sunscreen. The tan may look nice now, but you’ll wish later you hadn’t gotten it.

My biggest beauty mishap was participating in the color run and unknowingly dyeing my hair green for weeks!!
My best beauty tip – always remember to wear sunscreen. It’s just a simply step daily but goes a long way to keep your skin healthy.

I have also been guilty of a heavy hand with the bronzer! LOL. My funniest mishap was definitely the time I used a mayonaise mask on my hair. It was ridiculously hard to wash out and so, so, so gross!
Stick your head in the fridge or blast the ice cold a.c. on your freshly done makeup- it’ll keep it locked in place… or so I heard… =)

I think eating healthy helps my skin, agree wearing makeup when I’m going to be sweaty is a waste. Thanks for the tips and giveaway.
