The highlight of our week this week was a brand new back door. This may not sound tremendously exciting, but the old one was just about rotting out of the wall, so it was much needed. Our next project is to get the back porch a bit more finished. Below, the old rotting door at left, the new unit at right, and the job in process!
We aren’t doing much nature study lately, but we were looking at the March edition of Barb’s “Handbook of Nature Study Newsletter,” and Kathryn perked up when she saw the idea to draw a chalk rainbow on the driveway before a spring rain storm. We knew the forecast called for rain, so we braved the pollen (seriously bad: we set new record highs this week!) and drew on the driveway. Later that evening, the rain washed it all away — along with at least some of the pollen!
Now things are only slightly yellow from the plethora of pollen. 😉
Our week has also been full of: knitting, and making pompoms for knitting projects; reading Freckles, and Kathryn reading The Jungle Book on her own; doing a bit of geography study on the state of Texas; learning about plate tectonics in A Child’s Geography; looking at random slides in the microscope (just for fun); daily copywork, and building a wind-powered yacht (with wheels) in LEGO simple machines class.

New doors are exciting in my world, too, so YAY!
The pollen has been ridiculous around here. I don’t usually have problems with seasonal allergies, but even I’ve suffered this week. I don’t know how my poor husband and kids, who all suffer from allergies, are standing it.
I will have to use the idea of coloring before rain. I’m sure my girls would love it! We’re still playing catch up for nature studies with Barb’s guidance.
We’ve been reading The Jungle Book, too. It is a favorite. And my, what beautiful doors!
Beautiful new doors! We need a new backdoor too! Our dog went through the screen last summer because she heard us outside and we waited to long to let her join us. 😉
And what a GREAT rainbow! I really should get some sidewalk chalk! We haven’t had any for a long time now!
I love all home improvements. It’s always so exciting!!! We’re starting to build a new house (well the builders are lol) and it’s all we can do to stay away from the site for a few days. We’re practically stalkers. lol
I hear you on the pollen. It’s always horrible here. Everything has a thick yellow coating of pollen for months on end.
Here in PA we aren’t struggling with pollen, but we are dealing with an abundance of ticks. We live in the “Lyme belt” and have already had one child develop Lyme disease.

Jessy – Ooops! If we get a screen, we’ll have to do the reinforcement thing so that doesn’t happen with Lacy the WonderDog! And even though I’m allergic to chalk, it is fun sometimes!

Ewwww! I hate ticks! Totally give me the heebeejeebees just thinking about them. Haven’t had one on me for years but still makes me shudder to think of!
Thanks! It’s now the only double-paned window unit in our house. It’s gonna spoil us and make us want to replace our windows sooner rather than later!

The pollen is crazy around here too! I really like the new door!!! Looks like maybe it lets in more light!!
I also want to try that rainbow chalk!! We have a bucket of sidewalk chalk by our door that hasn’t been used in a while…

We’ve fallen outta step with our Nature Study too. For us it has been too much rain/wet and too many germs. I’m tired of a sick household! We just keep giving it back and forth around here.

I love that she is outside drawing with chalk in her pjs. my girls often run outside and play in their pjs! 🙂
Well, we do play in pjs sometimes but that’s one of her play dresses. 😉
oh, lol… my girls have jammie dresses like that! 🙂 but they wear dresses all the time too. especially my younger two. they love dresses and skirts!
