Mother’s Day week, funny girls, & favorite things
In my life this week…
First of all, did you read about last Saturday? It was a kind of a big deal: Learning what {mothering} really is.
A bit of silliness while shopping at T.J.Maxx, and my Mother’s Day roses:
Kathryn worked as my assistant on a newborn session earlier this week. She is a good and patient assistant, and she enjoys learning more of how to help me. Lindsey sometimes helps Ken with high school senior sessions, but those require a little more height in holding off-camera lighting, and endurance in helping carry equipment, so Kathryn likes the baby sessions better.
Last night, we attended a home blessing for a sweet young couple who just bought their first home, and will be married in just a few weeks. They’ve had wedding showers, so we were asked to bring something for “under the sink or in the pantry,” and guests wrote blessings or verses on sticky notes to put all over the house. Right now the young man is living in the house, and the bride will move in after the wedding. We love these “kids” but one of my favorite things about them is the fact that they are proof that letting God write your love story goes soooo much better than the usual way of doing things these days — and that’s something I really want my girls to see.
In our homeschool this week…
We finished our 180 days last week, but we’re still going. I’m calling this our last week, but really, we’ll keep going til about the end of the month to finish up Kathryn’s math, and then we may go ahead and start next year’s math before we officially begin the rest of next year’s schoolwork.
My favorite thing(s) this week were…
- enjoying a relaxing Mother’s Day, and Kathryn’s excitement in picking out roses for me.
- being reminded how blessed we are to have sweet, true, Jesus-honoring friendships
- sitting on the porch, watching hummingbirds come SO close. (Look for her in the lower right corner of the photo with the feeder)
- listening to Ken play the guitar
- spending more time outdoors in the beautiful weather
Questions/thoughts I have…
You don’t want to open this can of worms. I always have entirely too many thoughts. Just ask my husband. 😉
Things I’m working on…
I’ve started planning our next homeschool year, but I especially need to get busy with planning Lindsey’s upcoming school year, since she’ll be home again and we’ll be trying to squeeze two school years into twelve months. Yes, yes, I’ve been promising to write more about that, and I will soon — after I have this planning done!
I’m praying for…
Many things. But a big specific one is for my Dad; he is miserable every time he eats (with his gastric feeding tube) and has been more depressed lately because he just feels bad all the time. Can I say again that I hate ALS? I just learned that May is ALS Awareness Month; one rather simple thing you can do to help raise awareness is to “like” the ALS Association facebook page. If you want to do more, you could make a donation to help defeat ALS; I did this yesterday and plan to wear one of these bracelets when it arrives.
A photo to share…
I dug up this photo from my mom’s first Mother’s Day (1974).

Well..I’m reaching back a few days, but Happy Mother’s Day! 🙂
I *heart* the home blessing story! Congrats to the young couple. I send my blessing too!
I’m glad to hear that Lindsey is coming back home for school, yea! Love that photo of you with your parents. The clothes are priceless 🙂 Glad to hear that Lindsey is okay, fainting is scary for the fainter and the ones who have to watch. Have a great weekend!
Wonderful week!! Love that first picture of your girls. LOL
Popping in from HSMJ
That baby picture is just beautiful! How wonderful that your daughter can assist you and learn a bit while spending time with you!
I am definitely looking forward to hearing about your “two years in one” plan for next year. 🙂
Thanks, Judy! I’m still wrapping my mind around this planning thing, but think it’s going to be the best thing for Lindsey!
Jamie ~ I see your hummingbird… I’m impressed you could snap a picture. All I could do was write about mine. ha! 🙂
Maybe one day I can have you do a photo session with my family – since you live fairly close, it’s something to think about!
Enjoy your weekend!
Mary, I’d love to do a session for your family; let me know if you decide you want to!
And yes, I was SUPER impressed with getting the hummingbird in the photo since I snapped that with my iPhone, which does not have a very fast shutter speed!
It seems like a lot of us are done with our required days and are looking for a good stopping point. We have a few more language arts workbook pages to complete and a unit study to wrap up. I love the opportunities to see God’s love stories.
Blessings, Dawn
Jamie, I love that your girls are learning about photography with y’all – I love the hummingbird – I really want some of those – I am going to pray sincerely for your daddy- starting right now. I’ll also go like the fb page – God bless & hugs!!!!
Thanks so much, Kelli.
I’m glad Lindsey is coming home next year. I can’t wait to hear your planning ideas. I am always interested in High School plans.
Love the picture of your 2 girls and your Mom. So sweet. The home blessing is an amazing idea. I love that!
Happy weekend!
2yrs into 12 months – if anyone can do it I know you can!!
Stef,
Ha! I’m surely not more qualified than anyone else, but I think we can do it! Thanks for the encouragement! 🙂
I am so sorry about your dad. A dear, dear friend of mine suffered through ALS. There really are just no words adequately to explain it. I will pray for your dad as well. I love that picture of your mom! It makes me wonder if I have one of mine on her first Mother’s Day! I am going to look.
Laurie,
Thanks for the kind words and the prayers. I truly do appreciate it.
I’ll be praying for your dad too! I’m very close to my father so I know the feeling whenever he’s sick or not in a good condition. And, the baby photo you took is just so adorable!
Jill, thank you on all counts!
A week of both blessing and trial, and the Lord is smack in the middle of both. Praises for that! Thinking of you as you juggle it all.
Thank you, Ellen! And I’m still waiting on those dark chocolate cookies you made to magically appear on my kitchen counter but it’s just not happening yet. 😉
You’ve had a full week! I hopped over and read your post about Lindsay – sounds like a really big deal indeed!
I love hummingbirds, and sitting around listening to guitar, and what a sweet picture of your mom. =)
Those girls are amazing and funny. I feel for your dad who is not well. All will be fine with him.
